Weatherald and Gibson win major awards at CT Awards Night!

The Cricket Tasmania Awards Night, held this year at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, provides an opportunity for the Tasmanian cricket family to celebrate the achievements of the 2024-25 season.

The major awards for the 2024-25 season are the Ricky Ponting Medal, the men’s best player across both formats and the Veronica Pyke Medal, for the best player in the WNCL, along with the Hurricanes Best Players in the WBBL and BBL.

Last year’s winner of the Ricky Ponting Medal was Beau Webster, who had the best individual all-round season in recent memory, and the Veronica Pyke Medal was won by Nicola Carey.

The 2024-25 Ricky Ponting Medal has been awarded to Jake Weatherald.

Weatherald after being unable to find a spot in the Tigers starting XI last season, came back from a winter stint in the UK ready to dominate domestic cricket and that he did!

In a Sheffield Shield season to remember, Weatherald would go on to score 906 runs with three 100s to his name, at a strike rate of 68.27, finishing first overall in the total runs scored in the entire Shield competition and 250 runs more than the next best Tasmanian Tigers player.

The Veronica Pyke Medal has been awarded to Maisy Gibson.

Gibson, who did not hold a central Tasmanian Tigers contract last season, returned with a vengeance in the 2024-25 season.

Finishing equal second for the competition with 23 wickets, Gibson’s leg-spin would bamboozle the opposition while managing to keep the scoring down with her economy rate being one of the lowest in the competition at 4.39.

The Hobart Hurricanes BBL Player of the Year has been won by Mitch Owen.

Owen, playing in a new role of opening the batting for the Hobart Hurricanes, dominated BBL|14 from the outset as his name became a fan favourite when the Purple Army lifted the BBL Trophy for the first time.

Scoring the most runs in the competition (425 runs), hitting the most sixes (36 – 10 more than the next best), and finishing in the BBL Team of the Year, Owen’s season goes down as one of the most impressive in Hurricanes history.

The Hobart Hurricanes WBBL Player of the Year has been won by Nicola Carey.

Carey, batting in the new role of number three for the Hobart Hurricanes and making her usual impact with the ball, had another impressive season in purple.

Finishing third in the overall run scoring for the Hurricanes and second most in wickets, Carey’s consistency across the board has won her the award this year, despite many strong performances from other members of the WBBL squad.
