Cricket Tasmania Awards Night – A Celebration of Talent at the Hotel Grand Chancellor

The Cricket Tasmania Awards Night at the Hotel Grand Chancellor is on tomorrow night, as Cricket Tasmania celebrates the outstanding achievements of the 2024-25 season.  

The night will honour the talent, passion, and dedication of Tasmania’s finest players across various teams and formats of cricket.  

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the nominees for the major awards of the night, the Ricky Ponting and Veronica Pyke Medals.  

Ricky Ponting Medal Nominees  

Beau Webster’s all-round brilliance continues to impress, with a stellar season that included 479 runs at an average of 47.90 and 35 wickets across formats. His standout moment was a sensational 6/17 against Western Australia in the One Day Cup, cementing his place as one of the best all-rounders in Australia. 

Jake Weatherald, having returned to form, scored 906 runs in the Sheffield Shield, including three centuries. His resilient counterattacks when conditions were tough were pivotal in securing victories for the Tigers. 

Matt Kuhnemann, Tasmania's spin hero, made an instant impact in his first season, claiming 24 wickets in the Shield. His composure under pressure and ability to take crucial wickets have been key to Tasmania’s success. 

Mitch Owen had a breakthrough season, starring as an opening batsman with a remarkable strike rate of 206.03 in the One Day Cup. His exciting 149 against South Australia was one of the season’s highlights. 

Veronica Pyke Medal Nominees  

Heather Graham’s all-round brilliance, including 217 runs and 9 wickets, continues to shine. Her influence with both bat and ball makes her a key figure in the Tigers lineup. 

Maisy Gibson made a sensational return to the Tigers, finishing with 23 wickets in the WNCL. Her leg-spin was instrumental in Tasmania’s success, earning her a well-deserved nomination. 

Molly Strano’s leadership and tenacity in the field made her a standout performer, claiming 16 wickets and providing crucial contributions with the bat throughout the season. 

While last year’s winner Nicola Carey is every chance to go back-to-back, after a terrific all-round season with the bat and ball.
