Starting the 2025-26 re-signing period with a bang, the Tasmanian Tigers have re-signed experienced fast bowler Riley Meredith for two more seasons as he continues his career in the Apple Isle.
Following an impressive 23 wickets across his six Sheffield Shield matches in the 2024-25 season, and committing to the Hobart Hurricanes for three further seasons earlier this summer, Meredith is proud to be playing for Tasmania once again.
"Being a local boy it's always a big thing playing for your home state, and playing for Tassie has always filled me with a lot of pride to be able to represent this state.
"I have always loved playing with the boys that are here, they are some of my best friends, so it would have been pretty impossible to leave," said Meredith.
As one of Australia’s fastest bowlers, Meredith terrifies opposing batting line-ups with genuine pace bowling in all domestic cricket formats for Tasmania.
Taking his 100th Sheffield Shield wicket earlier in the 2024-25 season, Meredith made his debut for Tasmania in the 2017-18 season against Victoria as a 21-year-old and has since played in 34 first-class matches for the state.
He has career-best figures of 5-96 in the Sheffield Shield and a top score of 44 which came in the 2023-24 season with Beau Webster when he and Meredith put on 153 runs for the 10th wicket in a crucial partnership to help Tasmania win against Victoria.
In the 50-over format, Meredith has played 32 games for his state and has best bowling figures of 5-26 with 46 wickets across all his matches in his career so far.
Meredith has been involved with the Tasmanian program for nearly a decade, and his experience and leadership are often sought after.
He provides an x-factor for Tigers captain Jordan Silk whenever he throws him the ball.
Having played for Australia in T20 and ODI cricket, he will be looking to return to the national set-up in the coming seasons and remind the rest of Australia of the talent he possesses.
Salliann Beams, Cricket Tasmania's High Performance General Manager, discussed her excitement to see Meredith continue his career in Tasmania.
“Riz' has been a crucial part of what we are trying to build here as part of the Tasmanian Tigers program.
“We know how devastating he can be with the new ball with his raw pace, but what has been equally as impressive, is his red-ball craft where he can find other ways to dismiss opposing batters.
“To have him under contract for another two seasons is exciting for Tasmanian cricket, and I am confident he will continue to improve and play for Australia again soon,” said Beams.
Meredith is the first of several significant signings for the Tasmanian Tigers as the 2025-26 contracting period opened yesterday.
