CTPL Weekend Preview: Round 19 (Day Two)

An action-packed lineup of CTPL fixtures will reach their conclusion as day two of round 19 takes place on Saturday.

Lindisfarne is one of the teams of the precipice of a victory, as it trails by 178 to New Town with all 10 wickets in hand.

The Lightning managed to dismiss New Town for 235 last weekend, before ending the day at 0-57.

Coach Matt Wilkie was impressed with the effort of his bowlers.

“The guys were able to toil away on a pretty flat wicket,” he said.

“I think their rewards came with the ball later.

“They put a lot of hard work into it.

“Then to get a good positive start with the bat was great.”

Lindisfarne were bolstered by the returning duo of Mac Wright and Jarrod Freeman.

Freeman wasted no time in making an impact with the ball, taking 5/77, while Wright remains at the crease, 38 not out off 30 balls.

Wilkie isn’t downplaying the impact the two veterans have on the team.

“The returns of Mac and Jarrod were very impressive,” he said.

“They’re very important.

“Obviously they’re both good players, but just their ability to help the other guys as well.

“There were lots of little tips being passed on from both of them.”

The Lightning will look to continue their aggressive batting style as they resume the chase on Saturday, off the back of Wright and his partner Tom McGann.

“I think not shutting up shop is important in those situations,” Wilkie said.

“It’s about being positive, but also being smart about it.

“Hopefully they can bat well on a really good deck.”

A second win of the 2-days season would ensure Lindisfarne keeps its place in the finals positions ahead of round 20.

North Hobart is tasked with a difficult day with the bat as they pursue Clarence’s total of 361.

A rapid fire hundred from Roos all-rounder Sam Rainbird last weekend allowed the visitors to declare before stumps, taking the wicket of young opener Harry McHugh to pour the misery on the Demons.

Whichever side grabs the points will likely find themselves within the top four at the conclusion of the round.

Greater Northern Raiders will need to avoid a major collapse in order to defeat South Hobart-Sandy Bay at Queenborough.

The Sharks could only muster 198 before being bowled out, largely due to a 5-wicket haul from Jonathan Chapman.

Raiders’ opener Kaidyn Apted peeled off a half-century before stumps, setting his side up for a first 2-day victory of the season.

Ethan Clark [36 not out off 83 balls] and Aidan O’Connor [12 not out off 19 balls] will resume at the crease.

Alex Vincent’s historical 9-wicket performance last weekend will surely be enough for Kingborough to defeat Glenorchy, with an outright result potentially on the cards for the reigning 2-day premiers.

The Knights finished day one at 0-82, just 75 runs behind Glenorchy’s score of 157.

Nivethan Radhakrishnan [38 not out off 67 balls] and Zak Honeybrook [22 not out off 39 balls] will be looking to make the runs early, potentially giving Vincent another opportunity at the Magpie batsmen.

Kingborough is likely to remain undefeated, barring any major mishaps on Saturday.

In the women’s competition, Clarence is aiming for its fourth consecutive win, following an 0-9 start to the season, in an unprecedented turn of form.

The Roos have been bolstered by the recent inclusion of opening batsman Tabatha Saville.

Saville scored 167 off just 111 balls in last weekend’s win against Greater Northern.

Clarence face T20 premiers New Town on Sunday, the only team Clarence are yet to defeat this season.

New Town currently sit rock bottom of the one-day ladder, following a loss to North Hobart a week ago.

The Demons will travel north to face Greater Northern at UTAS Stadium on Sunday.

The Raiders hold a 3-1 record over North Hobart so far this season but haven’t been able to win a game since November, in contrast to the Demons good form.
