Caleb Jewell has capped off a superb season for Tasmania, being named as the Ricky Ponting Medallist for the first time. After finishing runner-up for Tasmanian cricket’s highest individual accolade for a male player in 2021-22, the 25-year-old went one better in season 2022-23, beating out Beau Webster, Jake Doran and previous two-time winner, Jackson Bird, for the honours. Whilst the Ricky Ponting Medal only takes into consideration votes from the Marsh Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup games, Jewell had an exceptional season across all three formats of the game, amassing 652 Shield runs at 38.35, 317 One-Day Cup runs at 52.83, and 289 BBL runs at a strike rate of 144.50.
For the Female Program it was Nicola Carey who took out the highest individual honour for the evening, being name the Female Tigers Player of the Year for a second time. Carey last won Tasmanian cricket’s top individual honour for a female player in 2020-21, when she shared the spoils with Heather Graham. Totalling 482 runs at 89.92 and taking 10 wickets – including best figures of 3-27 – in the Tigers’ back-to-back Premiership season, Carey’s win highlights the essential role of having a genuine allrounder in a team as successful as the Tigers women, beating out Elyse Villani (the competition’s leading run-scorer), Lizelle Lee (the Tigers’ second-highest run-scorer), and Sarah Coyte (the competition’s leading wicket-taker) for the award.
