Young gun signed on two-year rookie deal

Adding to their rookie talent, the Tasmanian Tigers have signed 19-year-old young-gun Rafael Macmillan on a two-year rookie deal.

Macmillan will move to Tasmania from Sydney following a successful NSW Premier Cricket 1st Grade season for St George CC, and as one of Australia’s top bowlers at the U19 World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

I’m really pleased to sign with Tasmania and can’t wait to get down to Hobart and get started with the group.

I’m looking forward to representing the state in the future!” stated Macmillan.

The right-arm off-spin bowler and handy lower order batsman, went from strength to strength in the NSW Premier Cricket competition last season, culminating in a 5/53 off 29 over performance to help St George to a title.

During the U19 World Cup, Macmillan also showed composure with the bat scoring 19* not out, guiding Australia home in the last over of the Semi-Final against Pakistan with number 11 batsman Callum Vidler.

Macmillan also captained NSW Metro during the U19 National Championship in Albury, leading the Blues to a National Championship defeating Queensland in the Final.

General Manager of High-Performance at Cricket Tasmania, Salliann Beams discussed Macmillan’s rookie signing.

Raf is a player who we believe has a lot of potential, and this showed in his performances for Australia and NSW U19s, and in NSW Premier Cricket last season.

His off-spin bowling craft, and leadership qualities at such a young age made him a great candidate for a rookie contract who we hope can play a role for us in the coming years,” discussed Beams.

Macmillan joins his U19 Australian World Cup teammate Aidan O’Connor, as one of four rookie contracted Tigers ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The full Tasmanian contract list will be announced tomorrow morning.
